Cal-Rods: Don’t Call it a Comeback…
March 30, 2018
They’ve been here for years. In fact, the Cal-Rods Car Club of San Gabriel Valley was started in 1954 by a group of students at Baldwin Park High School. Over sixty years later, the club is still going strong with 400+ members, some of whom will be showing off their rides at the Pomona Swap Meet on April 15th, as our Featured Car Club.
The club’s membership now spans three generations, but many of the senior members are original or long term members, including club president Vic Cunnyngham (Baldwin Park High, class of 1960). And if you’re into cars, the club would love to meet you. They’re always looking for new members. As club board member Mark Bower tells me, their only rules are that “you have red blood and drive something other than a horse.” Yep, with a membership this big, these guys are into everything: from Tri-Fives to Shoeboxes, Buick to Mopar, hot rods to trucks, and even a COE here or there.
I would add that you also have to be social… because this is a club that likes to get out and do things! The club’s calendar is full of activities. In addition to weekly dinners and meetups, upcoming highlights include the Baldwin Park High School Reunion Picnic & Cal-Rods Car Show on May 6, 2018. This will be the 21st year for the picnic and it promises to be a good time at San Dimas Canyon Park, whether you’re a BPHS alum or not. The Cal-Rods are also looking forward to their 12th Annual Run With a Winner Car Show on May 20, 2018. This is the club’s main event, held at the legendary Santa Anita Park, in Arcadia, Calif. Park on the infield and spend an incredible day at the races!
If you’re looking to share your love of cars with like-minded individuals, who enjoy getting out of the garage, come meet the Cal-Rods at the Pomona Swap Meet on April 15, 2018!
