Five Classic Movies Featuring Classic Cars
November 21, 2013
What a perfect pairing: classic movies with classic cars! For an enjoyable evening, check out one of these Pomona Swap Meet recommendations…
1) Back to the Future (1985) – the film that’s now synonymous with the infamous DeLorean DMC-12! Starring Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox, Back to the Future featured a one-of-a-kind, custom built, time traveling DeLorean that every viewer will remember forever. In fact, these days the only reason that we think a DeLorean is still cool is that we hope Marty McFly climbs out when the gull-wing doors open!
2) Gone in 60 Seconds (2000) – this remake starred Nic Cage and his favorite lady, Eleanor… a 1967 Ford Mustang fastback! In the film, the car was disguised as a Shelby GT500 to add to the allure! Eleanor featured a 400 horsepower, 351 Ford V-8 crate engine, and a 4-speed manual transmission. Need some movie trivia to wow your friends? Well, Eleanor was sold at auction for $1M earlier this year. Wow.
3) Ghostbusters (1984) – Who could forget Ecto-1, the 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor ambulance conversion? The film is a classic 80s comedy, with some of the biggest players ever… Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Sigourney Weaver. The Caddy was famously used to chase ghosts around New York City and it became an iconic symbol of the Ghostbusters franchise. What better way to haul your proton packs? Unfortunately, Ecto-1 has been left to rot since the 80s, and recently a fan group actually petitioned Sony to sell the car to them so that they can restore it to its ghost busting best.
4) Le Mans (1971) – one of the most well known auto racing movies of all time. Starring Steve McQueen (the king of cool!), the film featured actual footage from the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in June 1970, as well as two classic cars: a Porsche 917 and a Ferrari 512. Drama ensues as the rivalry between the Porsche team, led by McQueen, and the Ferrari team builds! Of course, this one is really all about the racing, with minimal plot. In fact, it takes 36 minutes before McQueen even has a line!
5) The original Italian Job (1969) and its remake (2003) both feature Mini Coopers. In the original, Austin Mini Cooper Mk1 models were used; in the remake, late Rover-produced models were used. Personally, I like the remake better. Maybe it’s the modern Minis… maybe it’s Charlie Theron. Both versions are classic caper films worthy of a couple of hours of your time.
These are just a few of our favorite movies that feature classic cars! Now, before you send in your hate mail, keep in mind that these are listed in no particular order AND we know that there are more movies out there that could have made the list (Bullitt anyone?). Feel free to make your own list, and then come share it with us at our next event on December 8!
