A Look at the History of Porsche
March 11, 2013

Porsche is one of the most iconic names in the entire automotive world. And while their newer cars are extremely advanced, it’s important to remember where they all came from.
The company’s most famous car is the 911. Infact, the original 911 was known as the 901. However, there was a conflict with Peugot over the title which forced them to change it to 911. Production started in 1964. The following year, 911’s reached the U.S. with a sticker price of $6,500.
In 1973 one of the most collectible Porsches of all time, the 911 Carrera RS, was revealed. Featuring a chassis very similar to the 911 Carrera RSR, this generation was one of the best handling cars of its time.
1975 saw a huge milestone in the company’s history with the release of the first turbocharged 911. Known as the 930 in the U.S., this turbocharged 911 was an extremely exciting car to drive. Despite the sometimes unpredictable handling and turbo lag, the 260 horsepower of the 930 was a huge hit and continues to be a hit to this day.
Some 911 owners like to customize and personalize their cars. The mods for 911’s range from subtle to extreme. For example, some owners prefer to simply install aftermarket wheels or lower the car’s suspension while others go for race inspired wide-body kits, low profile tires, roll cages, spoilers, exhaust systems, more powerful turbochargers… the list goes on.
One last note before we wrap up our look at the history of Porsche. Let’s take a look at the car that started it all. The 356 you ask? Nope! We’re going all the way back to the VW Beetle! When you think about it, the Beetle is one of the most important cars of all time. And if it wasn’t for the Beetle, we wouldn’t have the 356, 911, 944 or any of Porsche’s iconic race cars. So thank you VW!
