Pomona Swap Meet-Not Just for the Guys
February 8, 2013

Seeing beautiful women being featured in advertisements for classic cars or hot rods is not new. However, the increase in women who are becoming classic car collectors may be. What once was considered a man’s world is drawing more and more women. And while the men still outnumber the girls; women collectors are attending, buying and selling at more car events such as the Pomona Swap Meet.
One of the high profile hobbyists is Tammy Allen who has followed in her father’s footsteps as a car collector and fan of American muscle cars. In pursuit of finding cars to add to her collection, Tammy regularly attends car auctions featuring high-end vehicles. Her collection currently includes over 100 vehicles (and counting) including a 1968 Camaro SS, a 1913 Ford Model T, a 1931 Ford Pickup and a 1938 Cadillac Convertible. With all of these cars to spare, Tammy came up with a novel business venture where she rents out her classic cars. Allen Unique Autos, as she calls it, is located in Grand Junction, Colorado where it offers 100 vehicles to rent. In addition to her rental business, Tammy has opened a classic car museum in Colorado called the Allen Unique Autos Museum featuring over 70 beautiful autos. As if it wasn’t enough, Tammy fills her spare time with television appearances where she has been featured in two shows on the Speed Channel.
So what do women really want? According to Hagerty Insurance, who is America’s biggest insurer of classic cars, the five most popular cars for women collectors are:
- Corvette– This Harley Earl original is a perennial favorite of everyone, whether a car buff or not, so it comes as no surprise that it is the most prized by female collectors.
- Mustang– Again a very popular muscle car that has fans spanning six generations.
- Camaro– The most sought after are the convertible models with women enjoying the range of colors that are available.
- VW Beetle– This fun to drive cult favorite is great for the new collector and women are buying both the new models and the classics.
- Ford Thunderbird– While not originally promoted as a sports car, the Thunderbird eventually made it to the stock car scene; but the 1956 T’bird driven by Suzanne Somers in “American Graffiti” seems to be the one that women want.
So do not be surprised on March 3rd, as you walk through the classic car show and shop at the vendors booths, to see increased numbers of women also enjoying the Pomona Swap Meet & Classic Car Show. Besides the thrill of owning a piece of automobile history, the investment potential of antique cars continues to spur interest in the hobby.
