Single Marine Program-Twentynine Palms Visits The Pomona Swap Meet
February 13, 2012
YOUNG MARINES CHECKING OUT THE HOT RODS!
We are proud of the men and women in the Armed Forces who unselfishly and bravely serve our country and we were honored to have welcomed a group of them as our guests at the January 15th, 2012 Pomona Swap Meet.
A dozen enthusiastic Marines joined us for a day of perusing classic cars and parts. The trip was arranged by the Single Marine Program (SMP) at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, CA. The SMP was established to provide a forum for Marines to identify quality of life ideas and recommend solutions. The Marines are offered responsibility and leadership opportunities by directly participating in the planning and coordination of events and activities. The activities are as varied as the single Marines the program serves, because it belongs to them. The programs focus is on 3 major components: Quality of life, recreation and community involvement. Single Marines contribute tens of thousands of community service hours each year. They participate in Habitat for Humanity, Toys for Tots, Adopt a School, beach cleanups, veteran’s home visits and many more.
The Single Marines of 29 Palms make a difference on base as well, by sponsoring events such as a Super Bowl Party, a trip to the Silver Spur Rodeo in Yuma, Arizona and Ping Pong and Poker Tournaments. They also sponsor voter registration drives, personal financial management seminars and healthy lifestyle briefs.
We were honored that they chose the Pomona Swap Meet & Classic Car Show as an outing. I expect they had a great day, maybe found a classic ride or some parts needed to fix one up and we hope to have them back again soon.
You can find them on Facebook at SMP-29.
